Vice-Chancellor
Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor
“If I could name what’s impressed me most since joining Bath Spa University at the start of 2012, it would be the unique culture of care that permeates its activities.
The University is a vibrant and creative environment that transforms the lives of students through a distinctive, challenging and fulfilling university experience. We place a huge emphasis on teaching quality, and have created a friendly community which values creativity, culture and enterprise.
Employability is always high on our agenda and our partnerships with employers, businesses and professional bodies are key to the success of this initiative. We aim to develop partnerships with universities across the globe to produce graduates who are ambitious global citizens, ready to make a difference.
Bath Spa University shares the strengths and characteristics of many of the UK’s excellent Universities. However it also a University of unique contrasts, offering a diverse mix of heritage, modernity, tradition and innovation.
Our campuses are beautiful and steeped in history, and our modern facilities blend sympathetically with the older buildings, while boasting a wealth of cutting edge technology behind the classic architecture.
Starting in summer 2012, the Newton Park campus will undergo a major redevelopment, providing world-class facilities for students, all of which has been designed to be in keeping with the stunning surroundings, while meeting stringent standards of environmental performance that reflect the University’s caring ethos.
We look forward to welcoming you to Bath Spa University”

About the Vice-Chancellor
2012 is a year of change for Bath Spa University, as Professor Christina Slade takes the helm as Vice-Chancellor.
Bringing with her a wealth of experience from her former roles as Dean of the Schools of Arts and of Social Sciences at City University London, Dean of Humanities at Macquarie University (2003-8) and Professor of Media Theory at the University of Utrecht, Professor Slade will be leading the university through a world-class campus development project, as well as the greatest changes for a generation in the way UK Universities are financed.
Trained as a philosopher of logic and language, her research has focussed on issues of the media since 1990. Her monograph, ‘The Real Thing: doing philosophy with media’ (2002) examines the role of reason in the media, while ‘From Migrant to Citizen: testing language, testing culture’, (2010) jointly edited with Martina Möllering, looks at linguistic, legal and philosophical aspects of citizenship testing.
Professor Slade says: “There couldn’t be a better time to join Bath Spa University as we move through one of the most interesting times in higher education for quite some time. This is a wonderful opportunity to help the University pursue its ambitions, and to promote its reputation both at home and abroad.”
