Rough Guide to Food Shortlisted for Campaigning Award
A book on where to find the UK's best food, co-written by Bath Spa University lecturer Katharine Reeve, has been shortlisted for an award from the food writers' and broadcasters' professional body.
The Rough Guide to Food, by Katharine Reeve and George Miller, has made this year's shortlist for the Guild of Food Writers' Derek Cooper Award for campaigning and investigative writing on the subject.
Katharine spent 18 months researching the book, alongside her work teaching undergraduate Creative Writing and English Literature at Bath Spa University and running its Foundation Degree in Publishing.
The Rough Guide to Food is the first book of its kind, tackling controversies over GM food, global sustainability and the impact of big supermarkets on the food industry, as well as giving tips on small producers, food markets and how to control what we eat.
The guide is aimed at those with a serious interest in food, digging beneath the myths and hype surrounding campaigns by celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. It covers a wide range of topics, from the organic food movement and Fair Trade products to advice on creating the perfect allotment or making a healthier packed lunch.
The Guild of Food Writers' Awards are the only awards judged entirely by professional food writers, journalists and editors. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 17 June.
Press Release Issued 01 June 2010 by School of Humanities and Cultural Industries.
