Food Guide by Bath Spa Lecturer Wins Campaigning Award
A book on where to find the UK's best food, co-written by Bath Spa University lecturer Katharine Reeve, has won a national award from the food writers' and broadcasters' professional body.
The Rough Guide to Food, by Katharine Reeve and George Miller, has received the Guild of Food Writers Derek Cooper Award for campaigning and investigative writing on the subject. It was presented to both of them at a ceremony in London.
The pair beat off strong competition from journalists on BBC Radio Four's You and Yours and the Observer newspaper, who were also shortlisted.
The Rough Guide to Food is the first book of its kind, tackling controversies over GM food, global sustainability and the impact of big supermarkets on the food industry, as well as giving tips on small producers, food markets and how to control what we eat.
Katharine Reeve spent 18 months researching the book, alongside her work teaching undergraduate Creative Writing and English Literature at Bath Spa University and running its Foundation Degree in Publishing.
She said: "I am delighted with this prize. The aim of the book was to get behind the wall of secrecy surrounding food and to give shoppers the knowledge they need to make informed choices."
The guide is intended for people with a serious interest in food, digging beneath the myths and hype surrounding campaigns by celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. It covers a wide range of topics, from the organic food movement and Fair Trade products to advice on creating the perfect allotment or making a healthier packed lunch.
The Guild of Food Writers Awards are the only awards judged entirely by professional food writers, journalists and editors.
Press Release Issued 22 June 2010 by School of Humanities and Cultural Industries.
