Food and Nutrition Awareness at Bath Spa

Food and nutrition experts at Bath Spa University held a special event for young people to encourage healthier eating.

More than 130 sixth formers from local secondary schools and colleges attended the eighth annual Food and Nutrition Awareness Day at Bath Spa University on Wednesday 30 June.

The event was originally due to be held last January but had to be re-scheduled because of snow and freezing temperatures.

Staff and students from Food and Nutrition courses in the University's School of Science, Society and Management were on hand to give the sixth formers advice on healthy eating, diet, exercise and lifestyle.

There were presentations on topics ranging from weight-watching to food packaging. A number of graduates and current final year students also presented their own research on issues such as changing your diet, the nutrients in selected delicatessen products and the diets of 16 to 18 year old female students.

The food and drink industry is the UK's largest single manufacturing sector, employing about half a million people. However, nationally the industry still cannot recruit enough graduates with food-related degrees, although the number of students taking Food and Nutrition courses at Bath Spa University has doubled since 2004.

Dr Anil de Sequeira, Subject Leader for Food and Nutrition at Bath Spa University, said: "The University has a specialist Food and Nutrition section which can date its origins back to 1892. It has a long tradition of providing vocationally orientated Food and Nutrition courses which educate and train tomorrow's practitioners.

"We see our role in the broader scheme of education in industry, providing advice and support to food businesses as well as providing high-calibre graduates to work in the food industry."
