Bath Spa Students Win National Design Awards

Two design students from Bath Spa University have won prestigious national awards for their work.

Kate Boccaccini-Meadows and Anna Jensen were judged to be among the best young talent in the country at the New Designers 2010 show in London, which is for new design graduates throughout the UK.

Kate, who is about to graduate from Bath Spa University's BA course in 3D Design: Ceramics, won the Runner-Up Award for the top accolade, New Designer of the Year. She received the 500 pound prize for her collection Air Force, in which she experimented with a multitude of materials to form a composition lying between art, craft and design.

The judges praised Kate's "quiet, dignified exploration of material and processes, using a range of media, culminating in a beautiful and well observed body of work".

Kate will be taking up a short residency in Denmark later this year, preceded by an exhibition at Centre Space in Bristol in August.

She said: "It's lovely to know that people appreciate my work. This award validates all the hard graft."

Anna Jensen, who is graduating from Bath Spa University's BA Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors, won the New Designers Harlequin Award with her vibrantly coloured floral wallpaper and cushions, inspired by Swedish prints and patterns.

Anna said: "It's such an achievement, especially when surrounded with such amazing work from all over the country."

Her prize is 1000 pounds plus a six-week paid work placement with the Harlequin wallpaper and fabric label.

Meanwhile another new graduate from the Bath Spa course in Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors, Clara Kelly, has won an award from the leading craft magazine Selvedge for her work creating figures out of textile fabrics.

Joint Course Leader John Miles said: "I am thrilled that Bath Spa University students were given recognition in such a prestigious event as the New Designers show. We are very proud of the students' achievements and hope they do well in their future careers. It is a great accolade that they have been chosen from among so many universities and colleges nationwide."
