Personal Profile For Prof Iftikhar Malik

Personal Statement:

Professor Malik teaches courses on the U.S. history, imperial history, historiography, South Asian history, and the politics of Contemporary Muslim world. During 2004, he taught an MA course (International Politics) at the University of Brussels, while in 2006, he was a visiting Erasmus Professor at the University of Barcelona (AUB). In July 2007, he lectured to International Summer Seminar of Institute of International Relations (Athens), held on the island of Hydra. In 2007-8, he trained more than one hundred EU election monitors for Pakistan at Pisa's Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. He presented a paper to an international conference on Political Islam on 26 November, convened by the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels. He presenteed a paper and chaired a session at the international conference on Punjab held in Lahore on 29-31 December 2008. He has published fifteen books and seventy research papers in international journals. Three of his books have appeared from Oxford in St. Antony's Series, while two have been published by Oxford University Press. His two recent books deal with Islam and Modernity in reference to Muslims in Europe and the United States. He has contributed articles in The Encyclopaedia of Islam, OUP's Encyclopaedia of Human Rights, Blackwell's History-Compass, World Book Encyclopaedia, World and Its Peoples, and several other reference projects. He is frequently interviewed by the media on world affairs and has offered seminars at various international fora. He is also associated with Wolfson College and lives in Oxford. He has been an external examiner for the University of Bradford (1998-2002, 2005, 2008); University of Birmingham (2007); University of Sussex (2007-8) and at the universities in Karachi, Islamabad, Bahawalpur, and Aligarh (1992-5, 2008). During 2000-2004, he served as an External Examiner for London Metropolitan University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and since 2003 is a trustee of the UK Iqbal Acadmey. Professor Malik is on the editorial board of five scholarly journals based in Oxford, Coventry, Stockholm, Karachi and Islamabad. Since 9/11, Professor Malik has offered 700 interviews to the print, audio and visual media on a wide variety of subjects. His recent publications include two books with Greenwood Press, USA, (2005 and 2008), a chapter in Amnesty International Lecture/OUP Series (2006); a paper in Seminar (Delhi, 2007)and five Online papers for scholarly sites/journals.
