Personal Profile For Mr Adam Powell

Head of Employability. Employability.

Personal Statement:

Adam Powell joined the University's Senior Management Team as Head of Employability in February 2008, having joined the institution in September 2005 as Manager of Artswork, Bath Spa University's Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in the creative industries.

With responsibility for Bath Spa Careers and Artswork, Adam is resposible for developing a new co-ordinated and integrated approach to employability across the University through working in partnership with Schools and Departments and a range of regional and national external opportunity providers.

The evolving approach includes: the Careers service working closely with university departments, with qualified careers professionals providing input into employability-related curriculum; the effective co-ordination of co-curricular and extra-curricular career-development learning opportunities; the development of new and existing links with employers, professional bodies and networks throughout higher education and industry; and the harnessing and interpretation of recent graduate data (e.g. DLHE) and the latest labour market trends.

The development of activities related to employability build upon the strengths and focus of individual schools and departments, as well as drawing on experiences from across Artswork in areas such as curriculum space, professional practice and meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration.

Prior to this role, Adam worked within the creative and cultural sector for over ten years, as Projects Manager and interim Acting Director for the Association of British Orchestras (2002-2006) - the national employers' body for the professional orchestral sector - and in Orchestral Management at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (1998-2002). Adam has worked in a range of project/event/tour manager capacities for a number of organisations including the National Youth Music Theatre, Covent Garden Festival, Royal College of Music and Blackheath Halls, London. He has also worked as a freelance Concerts Manager and Production Manager at a range of music venues across Scotland and with arts organisations including the London Philharmonic Orchestra. As both musician and arts manager, he has been fortunate to tour with a number of orchestras and ensembles extensively across Europe, USA, Canada, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

His roles at Bath Spa University are his first within higher education since graduating from the University of Aberdeen (BSc Psychology, 1996) and City University, London (Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Administration, 1997).
