Personal Statement:

As Educational Researcher and Developer for Artswork, Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in the creative industries, at Bath Spa University, I lead two projects.

'Learning in the Arts' is a major longitudinal research project looking at art students' perceptions and experiences ( http://www.artsworkbathspa.com/develop/view-page.php?page=Learning+in+the+Arts ).
10by10 is an inquiry into the experience and role of teacher-practitioners, through a series of workshops and events which explore the links between professional devevelopment and research ( http://10by10.info ) through creative practcie technqiues. I am interested in the concepts of the entrepreneurial educator and the freelance faculty, which link these two projects, particularly through the teacher-practitioner.

I have been a researcher for over five years, mostly in arts education, with a background in design. Previous roles include Educational Researcher and Developer with the Higher Education Learning Partnerships [HELP] CETL at the University of Plymouth, where I managed the Award Holder Scheme which funded pedagogic research projects. Prior to this, I worked as a Research Officer in the Centre of Excellence in Sustainability in the Built Environment at the University of Brighton, School of Environment, and on a number of projects for the Faculty of Art and Architecture. I also delivered a Level 2 module 'Conceptions of Land-scape, for two years, which focused on the relationship between story-telling, experiential learning and cultural theories and visual culture in understanding land-scape as a construct.

Biography:

Following work in the vooultary sector and having extensively refurbished a house, as designer, project manager and builder, I went on to complete a BA in Interior Architecture at the University of Brighton as a mature student. I found a passion for design and architecture and found links with previous interests from my first degree in humanities.

I was very conscious of the learning process and the range of skills and knowledge I developed though studying architecture, including the articulation, abstracting and connecting of ideas through problem solving and experimentation. I graduated with a first class degree and a dissertation prize. My interest in learning through design practice led me to pursue a career in research.

Subject Interests:

Relationship between teaching and arts practice
Inter-disciplinarity and disciplinary difference
Communities of Practice
The design/creative process and learning through design
Landscape [cultural and spatial theory and psycho-geography]
