A course for teaching assistants – improve your qualifications and develop your professional knowledge.

  • This degree is delivered locally through Bath College partnership with Bath Spa University.
  • Much of the learning on this vocational course will take place in your workplace.
  • This degree provides a route into teaching with a third year 'top-up' to honours degree level.

Embark on professional and career development. This course is for teaching assistants or learning and inclusion support assistants in all areas of teaching: early years, primary schools, secondary schools, special schools and post-16 teaching. The course covers all aspects of the work of the teaching assistant: the ways children develop and learn; appropriate and inclusive teaching methods; supporting learners with additional needs; social and emotional issues and contexts in learning; policy and legislation.

The course has a strong vocational element; you'll relate your own understandings of theory directly to your practice. Skilled and experienced teaching assistants need a specific route into higher education designed to reflect their diverse roles and responsibilities and the changing role and status of the school/college based teaching assistant; this course has been designed to meet those needs. 

What you'll learn

Overview

This course aims to develop reflective education practitioners, who will make valuable contributions to  to the lives and learning of children. You’ll explore the status of children in society and discuss how you can allow the voice of the child to be heard.

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of the regulatory and legislative framework for early years, and the government’s agenda and strategies as they relate to young children and their families. Through work-based learning, you’ll have the opportunity to complete a research project on an area of your choice, connected to your professional interests.

The course offers a progression route to an Honours Degree and to QTS via an appropriate ITT course such as a Primary PGCE.

Course components

By the end of this Foundation Degree, you'll have:

  • Demonstrated the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to good classroom practice
  • Planned for and worked with children individually and in small and class groups
  • Used a variety of assessment methods to support children’s development and learning
  • Supported children’s development and learning through working in consultation with others: colleagues, other professionals and parents
  • Demonstrated a thorough understanding of similarities and diversity and engaged in inclusive practice
  • Critically reflected on all aspects of your practice in relation to your work with children/pupils/students

  • Practice in the workplace
  • Written essays

How will I be taught?

This course is taught by highly qualified and experienced staff in partner colleges.

  • Professional reflection
  • Professional discussions with your mentor in the workplace

Progress to year 3 of an undergraduate course

After successful completion of this course, you may wish to apply to progress to the third year of the BA (Hons) Education Studies at Bath Spa University.

Where the subject is taught

This course is taught by highly qualified and experienced staff at Bath CollegeTeaching takes place in rooms equipped with relevant texts, equipment, training materials and electronic resources. Open access computer facilities are available.

The University’s Virtual Learning Environment (Minerva) provides remote access to a wide range of resources and to the Bath Spa University library.

What we look for in potential students

  • Appropriate accredited Level 3 qualifications (for example A-levels or vocational qualifications)
  • Working or placement as a teaching assistant (or in a similar role). This will be assessed on an individual basis.
  • Completion of a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Application through Bath Spa University.
