    We accept a wide range of qualifications for entry to our foundation preparartion programme. Typical offers would be A Level grades CC including Grade C in Art & Design or related subjects preferred; or BTEC -  Extended Diploma grades Merit, Merit (MM) in a related subject in addition to other qualifications or evidence of experience in Art.

    English Language Requirements for International and EU Applicants -IELTS 6.0, with a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 in each element.

    This foundation course is an exciting, hands-on opportunity for you to develop your art and design abilities in relation to contemporary practice. Our specialist student-centred environment will allow you to develop your ideas in an professional and fun atmosphere.

    The course is tailored to build your skills, so you can progress onto your chosen 3-year degree programme. You’ll leave the foundation course with a unique and thorough grounding in a broad range of areas within art and design.

    What you'll learn

    Overview

    You’ll learn by doing. We’ll encourage you to question and experiment with media and materials, in relation to contemporary art and design practice.

    We want you to:

    • develop your skills and confidence.
    • to see as well as look.
    • develop a flexible approach to navigating through life.

    Course structure

    Stage one

    We’ll introduce you to a range of approaches to drawing and experiment with media and materials in 2D and 3D.

    Stage two

    Continue to develop your skills in drawing and develop a body of work in a more specific specialist area.

    Stage three

    Write your own project and develop work in a specialist media over an extended period. Your work will be displayed in an end of year exhibition.

    How will I be assessed?

    Assessment on the course is continuous. There are formal internal assessment points at the end of stage one and two. Stage three is externally assessed.

     

    How will I be taught?

    All teaching staff are practicing artists or designers.

    Teaching is held through personal tutorials, as well as demonstrations and discussions. There are lectures on aspects of contemporary practice, in addition to collaborative work and outside visits.

    You’ll be taught in a variety of ways, which may include:

    • Workshops
    • One-to-one tutorials
    • Lectures
    • Demonstrations

    Opportunities

    Field trips

    There are trips and  drawing visits to museums art, galleries and specific exhibitions in the UK.

    Professional workshop facilities

    You’ll be able to attend introductions to a range of professional workshop facilities offered by Bath School of Art and Design.

    Interview and portfolio guidance

    Admission will be by interview. We’ll want to see a portfolio of your work, to assess your abilities and potential in any art and design media. In particular, we’re looking to see work done in your own time as well as course work.
