Our specialist MSc in Accounting and Finance provides the practical knowledge and skills demanded of successful managers. You’ll learn how to strategically direct an organisation, by analysing and interpreting financial information.
We empower you to confidently solve complex problems through sustained critical practice. This is informed by an awareness of contemporary current issues, theories and insights in the fields of accounting and finance.
You’ll graduate with a respected Master’s degree, from an excellent business school. Mapped to CIMA and ACCA accreditation, this programme will significantly enhance your employability, providing a step up into accountancy professions. A robust academic Master’s level course, you should expect to further your intellectual and cognitive development.
What you'll learn
This course is designed to prepare you for a career in accountancy or finance.
You’ll study complex, contemporary accounting and finance subjects to an advanced level, complemented by social science research methods teaching. This leads to either an extended research project (known as a dissertation), or ‘live’ consultancy project (working alongside a real business or organisation).
As well as covering key accounting concepts, you’ll develop strategic knowledge and thinking skills, and have the option to take your study further – either within the fields of accounting and finance (by studying performance management; and strategic management) or business and management more broadly (by studying things like marketing, international business, or human resources management).
You’ll be encouraged to develop autonomy in:
- critiquing methodologies relevant to your research;
- evaluating the techniques you’ll employ; and
- taking an original approach in the application of knowledge to your projects.
How will I be assessed?
We use a range assessment tasks, including essays, reports, exams and presentations. You’ll work independently and as part of a team, including for assessments.
How will I be taught?
While independent study is key at Master’s level, Bath Spa University is a leading, teaching-focussed University, so we support you throughout your degree. You’ll learn through lectures, seminars, practical workshops, assessments, guided study and individual and group tutorials with your lecturers.
We make significant use of real-life case studies and examples, enlivening, enriching and contextualising your learning, and bring in external industry speakers wherever possible.
Where appropriate, we’ll organise field trips to enrich your learning.
Work placements, industry links and internships
We use simulated work experience strategies that require you to operate as if in a real-world work environment. The curriculum is enriched by links with industry. For instance, assessments may be formed around live briefs provided by local, national or international organisations, who will work collaboratively with you to develop solutions to existing business problems or needs.
We give the choice to work on a Consultancy Project, rather than writing a traditional dissertation. This means you’ll work with an existing or nascent business to undertake research related to an issue posed by the business; providing ideas, information and management advice. This will naturally further practical, work engagement skills alongside traditional academic, research skills.
The University’s Careers and Employability team, provide regular career and placement-specific workshops, as well as 1-to-1, dedicated advice sessions, to help you source and secure formative work placement experiences throughout and after your studies at Bath Spa University.
Competitions and awards
We encourage you to compete in a variety of University and external competitions, for example the University’s Business Plan Competition, the Bath Spa Award and CIMA’s Global Business Challenge.
