The Primary Teaching Pathway is ideal if you intend to qualify as an early years or primary school teacher. It is a three-year undergraduate programme which prepares you for a career in Primary Teaching and offers a guaranteed interview for our Primary PGCE programme. This route into teaching is very flexible – you won’t have to attend your PGCE interview if you change your mind in three years' time.

I believe that completing the Education degree prior to starting the PGCE has provided an invaluable ‘foundation’ to the PGCE course.

What you'll learn

Overview

We offer a wide range of modules for you to choose from, you’ll be able to explore education from many theoretical and ideological perspectives.

Course structure

Year one
The core module introduces key concepts and skills that underpin the subject of Education Studies. In addition there are a range of modules that enable you to explore your interests in, for example: early childhood education, childhood narratives, youth and community, adolescence and international ed. The compulsory module offers an introduction to primary schools and a ten day school placement.

Year two
You’ll consider more deeply the current issues in education. You’ll undertake an assessed placement in a primary school researching an aspect of teaching and learning . Your compulsory module provides a deeper understanding of the primary  classroom considering aspects of pedagogy, pupil voice, assessment and classroom organisation. At the same time you can continue to pursue developing interests by selecting from the  range of modules on offer which include learning through drama, international development, special educational needs and environment education amongst many others.

Year three
Your Core module is the Education Dissertation which allows you to explore in depth an area of interest by way of an empirical enquiry. This is an independent study supported by a designated academic supervisor. The compulsory module, Teaching and Professionalism  helps to bridge the gap between undergraduate study and teacher training. A ten day school experience will enable you to reflect on models and understandings of teacher professionalism and focus on areas for personal pre-professional training and development. A full range of additional modules is available to help expand or deepen your study in particular fields of enquiry.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed through coursework and are required to pass a school-based placement in year two. Coursework includes essays, group presentations, research-based reports and portfolio-based work. There are no examinations.

We’ll provide you with prompt feedback and give you regular guidance on how to improve your skills, knowledge and understanding.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is through a mixture of lectures (50 minutes), seminars and individual tutorials. Seminars are usually more informal than lectures – they are opportunities for you to discuss, ask questions and get involved in activities and debates. In year one, students will be timetabled for at least 12 hours each week.

All modules are led by experienced and respected university staff. Many staff are active researchers and authors in the field of education studies; from the outset they’ll introduce you to their particular specialisms and research interests, through a range of optional modules. You’ll also benefit from regular visiting speakers – these include headteachers, practitioners, educational advisers, specialist researchers and international visitors.

Opportunities

Schools and placements

We have an excellent partnership with schools and early years settings, where you can develop your understanding of teaching.

You’ll attend a placement in each year of the programme of approximately ten days. They usually occur on one day a week during a term, to allow you to continue with other university studies. Our optional modules provide further short placement opportunities to work with children and young people both locally and internationally. We’ll arrange each placement for you. We try to ensure you are located within a reasonable distance from where you live; however, you should normally expect to travel using your own or public transport.

You must be in possession of a Bath Spa DBS disclosure. Details are sent once you have accepted your place with us.

Study abroad

You’ll have the opportunity to study in a wide range of locations around the world. Our students have completed Erasmus+ and Exchange programmes in a variety of countries including Spain, the Netherlands and America.

We also have links with Zambia, India and Denmark.

Careers

Students on the Primary Teaching Pathway intend to enter the teaching profession. You’ll complete a three-year degree, with the option to continue onto the Primary or Early Years PGCE course, subject to meeting course requirements and completing a successful interview. PGCE entry requirements currently require you to demonstrate your suitability for teaching on a compulsory school placement, to complete the QTS skills tests and pass designated compulsory modules during your three years of undergraduate study.

What we look for in potential students

Your personal statement must indicate clearly at least two weeks of recent experience of observing or working in a primary school. You need to write about this experience and discuss what you have learned from it, and also discuss why you are applying for a degree in Education Studies. There are no interviews for the undergraduate programme, however you will be formally interviewed prior to entry onto the PGCE programme in line with entry guidelines for teacher training provision.

Please be aware that you'll be required to complete a DBS through Bath Spa University as part of the admissions process for this course.

Note: The entry requirements for subsequent interview to the PGCE programme may alter (for example, if the NCTL changes entry requirements for PGCE courses). You’ll be advised of any changes during the degree.

This is a practical and creative Music course. What you'll learn

Overview

Through the course you’ll study practical areas (such as classical or jazz performance on an instrument or voice and composition) and academic content (such as musicology relating to styles and genres from medieval through to pop, jazz and contemporary world music).

You can also study areas such as empirical music psychology, community music, opera and musical theatre, and issues within the music industry.

You’ll play to your strengths, with the opportunity to specialise in areas including music psychology, community music skills, world music and field studies, opera and musical theatre.

We currently have over 30 ensembles open to all students, including: numerous choirs; symphony and chamber orchestra; wind band and jazz big band; jazz small groups; our own Javanese Gamelan; brass, wind and string ensembles; folk; and experimental music groups.

Course structure

Year one
You’ll study performance, including weekly one-to-one instrumental/vocal lessons, composition in a wide range of styles and genres, music technology in our industry standard labs, world music lectures and practical workshops, musicology lectures and seminars, research and study skills.

Year two
You’ll develop skills in teaching and in the area of music management and promotion through the Professional Musician module. This offers you the opportunity to undertake a placement in an organisation of your choice.

In addition to the Professional Musician module (which is core) there are a number of optional modules. You continue to develop your musical skills, and increasingly you will specialise in areas of particular strength and interest – for example in performance, composition or musicology in classical or jazz styles.

Year three
You’ll have the freedom for creative output in specialisms such as performance or composition together with the choice of a wide range of supporting modules, from the Opera Project to Music Psychology and Music in Action (which is a community music module).

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed through coursework, including compositions and essays; spoken presentations; and through practical assessments such as recitals, technicals and rehearsals.

How will I be taught?

The course is taught through workshops, masterclasses, lectures, seminars, individual tutorials and instrumental/vocal lessons. Teaching sessions are highly interactive, whether face-to-face or online (for example, through wikis or discussion boards).

You’ll be taught by, and work alongside, a creative community of experts. Full-time staff are all practicing performers, composers and musicologists. You’ll also be taught by visiting staff, many with international reputations.

Opportunities

Study abroad

There are opportunities through the Erasmus scheme to study abroad for a term or longer in year 2 – we have links with university music departments and schools in Europe, particularly Germany, and the USA.

Performances

We give regular performances throughout the year in Bath as well as beyond. Each year we fully stage opera and musical theatre productions, ranging from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Puccini's Il Trittico, to Philip Glass's Satyagraha and Sondheim's Into the Woods and Company to Seussical.

Field trips

In year 2 and 3, particularly the modules ‘Music in its Cultural Contexts’ and ‘Music in Action’, students have the opportunity to engage with music projects in the community.

Work placements, industry links and internships

During the course you’ll explore the constantly changing needs of the employment market, and you’ll undertake a placement in Year 2. Recent placements have included the Bath International Music Festival, Bath Philharmonia, the BBC Proms, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne, Royal Opera, BBC Music Magazine, Dorling Kindersley and Real World.

You’ll benefit from masterclass sessions from industry experts. Recent visitors include: Peter Donohoe, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Jason Rebello, Joanna MacGregor, Graham Fitkin, Iain Ballamy and Rosa Mannion.

  • 17 practice rooms, three with electronically variable acoustic;

Applicants must have, or be working towards Grade 8 Music Practical in first instrument study and expect to achieve a minimum of Grade 5 Music Theory before joining our undergraduate programme.

Eligible applicants will be auditioned at our Newton Park campus between December and March where you'll be invited by email to:

  • Perform two contrasting items of repertoire at Grade 7/8 level.
  • Sight read a short piece or song at approximately Grade 6 standard.
  • Bring examples of original compositions or theory work.
  • Bring an example of a written essay in music.
  • More details will be provided on invitation.
