Creative Arts
This programme is ideal for adventurous students who do not wish to be restricted within the boundaries of a single art discipline.
The programme is concerned with contemporary creativity. It combines the opportunity for original and practical work with the challenges of critical thought and reflection across six major subjects (of which you choose two):
As creative artists you will develop and explore in two of these disciplines under the guidance of successful practising visual artists, poets, composers, novelists, designers and directors. You will be working with tutors who have strong professional profiles through exhibitions, publications, performances, recordings and broadcasts.
The degree aims to develop and enhance your practical and academic skills and understanding within each subject area, while providing opportunities for cross- disciplinary study, individual and collaborative project activity and vocational updating and experience.
You will develop the creative and critical skills needed to articulate your work as an individual artist. In addition you will learn to function as part of a creative community, alongside artists in other media.
An important emphasis in Creative Arts is on the support of practice by theory. We assume that you are primarily artists who are driven by the desire to create in a variety of media, and much of your time will be taken up with making things; theoretical or critical elements in the programme are aimed at supporting and enabling your personal practice. You will need energy and commitment in day-to-day working, and versatility in moving between different media and teaching styles.
Some Creative Arts students have maintained their spread of work across both subjects. Kathy Hinde graduated in 1997 in Art and Music and has been active as composer and artist with commissions in both areas from pianist Joanna MacGregor. Other graduates have concentrated on one of their two disciplines.
Course Structure and Content
This is a joint degree in which you choose two subjects. The provision of elective modules and project modules can allow a significant difference in the balance between the two subjects if you want to spend more time on one subject. Elective modules may be chosen from other Creative Arts modules or further modules in your main subjects, where available. Alternatively, you may choose electives from the full range of Modular Scheme subjects.

Year 1
You choose modules from your two Creative Arts subjects (some of which may be compulsory modules), along with elective modules.
Years 2 and 3
You continue your two Creative Arts subjects and, in Year 3, undertake an individual project. Projects may be within one of your two subjects or you may use them to explore relations between the two disciplines. Alternatively you may undertake a collaborative project where you work with another artist.
Teaching Methods and Resources
You will be taught through practical workshop sessions, individual supervision, seminars and lectures. Each main subject has an established programme of visiting artists, writers and musicians.
Some subjects also organise visits and field trips to national and international centres and events.
The Creative Arts programme is linked through the Socrates scheme to the University of Hildesheim in Germany, providing the opportunity to study in Germany for one term.
We also have links in Dance with Barcelona, Spain and Bytom, Poland; in Drama with Klaipeda, Lithuania; in Music with Joensuu, Finland; and in Textile Design with Oslo, Norway, offering good opportunities for exchange.
Each major Creative Arts subject has an excellent range of resources. Creative Writing is supported by a nationally renowned Creative Writing Centre and good film-making facilities in the new Artslab. The Michael Tippett Centre offers musicians an impressive concert hall, a multi-track recording and electro-acoustic music studio, 17 well equipped practice rooms and excellent music technology facilities. Students in Art and Textile Design have access to a good range of studios in painting, sculpture, textiles, photography and print- making, while Dance and Drama students will have access to the superb new University Theatre.
Assessment Methods
Continuous assessment (100% course work) for all subjects except Music, which combines coursework with some practical examinations in performance.
Entry Requirements
220-260 UCAS Tariff points (eg BCD; BB+AS c). Preferred subjects - Art, Art and Design, Fine Art, Photography, Textile Design, Dance, English, Music, Theatre Studies, Drama or Visual Arts (depending on subject choice).
Art Foundation course.
Offers may be based on folder of work (depending on subject choice).
Alternative qualifications welcome.
