Creative Media Practice

This degree course - designed in partnership with the media industry - will develop your creative potential through an innovative curriculum that fosters individual expression in a context of entrepreneurial freelancing.

You will follow a core programme of modules that will introduce you to the media industry and develop your understanding of current and emerging models of professional practice. You will specialise in two of the following fields of creative media practice: interaction design for web and print; digital photography; music technology; media production for TV, radio content and in corporate and advocacy work; editorial, PR and marketing for publishing; and scriptwriting for TV, radio and other platforms.

Course Structure and Content

Year 1

You will gain a knowledge of current practices in the UK's creative media industries, whilst at the same time gaining a grounding in key practical skills in two content creation fields. You will develop an understanding of different approaches to solving technical and aesthetic problems relating to content creation.

Modules:

Year 2

Work at Year 2 equips you with knowledge and critical understanding of both the established principles and techniques and the emerging trends in the application of digital media in a variety of creative and cultural industry settings. During the year you will develop your own creative practice as a budding content creator, working as a free lancer or in work based settings on original projects or live briefs. Students normally follow the same creative specialisms they took in Year 1.

Year 3

The third year is industry focussed and supports you in developing high level skills and techniques in your chosen field(s) of specialisation whilst providing mentoring and other kinds of support for your work on individual and group projects. Students normally take only one creative specialism but may chose to do project work in their other field of expertise.

Teaching Methods and Resources

Teaching methods include lectures, hands-on practice, workshops, group critiques and 1:1 mentoring - all designed to provide you with content creation skills, creative entrepreneurship skills, and a critical understanding of today's creative industries.

You will have access to industry-standard specialist equipment and edit suites, including the latest software (Final Cut Studio 2, Logic, Aperture and Shake; Creative Suite 3, Premiere Pro Suite, After Effects, and Macromedia applications)

Assessment Methods

Assessments are designed to develop and test your ability to create content in a variety of media and to develop the skills you will need to work successfully within a number of media roles. Methods of assessment will range from the creation of original content through reflective learning diaries, micro and small group projects to market assessments, and other written work. There are no examinations.

240-280 UCAS Tariff points (eg BCC; BB+AS a).
