Education Studies: Combined Awards
Education in a Combined Award allows you to study Education alongside another subject of your choice.
Course Structure and Content
You can take either subject as a major or minor. You can register for Education and most other subjects in the modular scheme... see permitted combinations under combined awards UCAS codes (Please note, if you are applying for Education, Leading to PGCE Primary instead, you will need to refer to the specialised awards UCAS codes). Such a programme can equip you for a range of employment where knowledge and understanding of education are required.
Education Studies is an important subject within our modular programme. As such there are a wide range of modules for you to choose from which explore education from many perspectives.
In year one a core module introduces key concepts and skills that underpin the subject. In addition there is a choice of modules that enable you to explore wider interests: early learning, childhood, adolescence, schools, international education. You are required to study a second subject from our modular programme alongside education, for the first year.
In year two you will consider more deeply the current issues in education in a second core module. This module incorporates a placement in a school or other educational setting. There is also a wide range of modules to choose from which encourages you to think critically about some contemporary issues: teaching, classrooms, diversity, inclusion, educational policy, arts education, global and international perspectives in education. There are opportunities to carry out original research and pursue your own interests in these areas. You can even study abroad in another European country under the ERASMUS scheme.
In year three there are further opportunities to follow your interests through selecting from a wide range of optional modules taught by expert staff. You are also required to undertake either a research or placement-based project module.
There are also modules in each year which give you the chance to work in schools and other educational settings in a placement to carry out research and observations. We have an excellent partnership with schools and settings in the region where you will be able to further develop your understanding of the nature of teaching and learning.
