Education, Leading to PGCE Primary

These award options are ideal if you intend to become a primary school or early years teacher.

For more information about this course please visit the School of Education website.

A Route Into Teaching

After graduating from the three-year degree you take a place on our one-year primary or early years PGCE training course which enables you to gain qualified teacher status. This place is guaranteed if you graduate with an honours degree and successfully complete a compulsory placement in a primary school during your second or third year.

At the time of application you must have met the other requirements for teacher training (currently GCSEs grade A-C or equivalent in English language, mathematics and science) and have at least 10 days of recent work experience in a UK state primary school or early years setting. In your personal statement you need to write about this experience and discuss what you have learned from it, and also discuss why you are applying for a degree in Education Studies. Ensure you apply using the relevant code for the specialised award, rather than the non-specialised three-year option.

During the specialised award you will study alongside other students on Education Studies awards. These enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of education and also follow your personal interests in teaching and learning through the selection of optional modules. This route into teaching is very flexible - you do not have to take your place on the PGCE if you change your mind in three years time. For those on a combined award, it may be possible to transfer onto secondary teacher training PGCE.

Available options are listed below, details of each degree award can be found by clicking on the award name below.

Three single honours awards are available:

It is also possible to combine Education with another subject in our modular programme to achieve a joint honours degree:

To apply for combinations of Education Studies with another subject, leading to PGCE Prinary, please ensure that you refer to the specialised awards UCAS codes.
