Course Structure and Content
Studio based modules are supported with studies in critical and historical contexts of photography, while visiting lecturers provide valuable industry perspectives and identify potential opportunities within the creative industries.
Year 1
The first year looks at fundamental photographic principles and practice. Modules cover darkroom, studio and basic principles of digital imaging. Project based modules explore the potential of digital contexts, while historical and critical studies will inform your individual practice.
Year 2
In your second year you will explore the relationship between photographic practice and the persuasive language of photographic imagery. Your study will include advanced studio practice, and you will continue to explore new technologies in photo-media. Studio modules offer tutorial led project work and incorporate professional workshop sessions led by industry practitioners. A range of production workshops explores materials and methods for photographic reproduction in both print and electronic forms of communication. Critical studies continue to inform and assist your individual practice.
Year 3
During this final year you will be able to define your own practice. Your knowledge and understanding of the medium will be advanced and you will have developed evaluative skills that will enable you to critique your own work. Self directed work forms the basis of third year practice and is supported by workshops and tutorials with academic staff and industry practitioners. The year ends with a public exhibition of portfolio work.
Teaching Methods and Resources
Throughout the course you will explore the contextual framework of Photography and Digital Media through Historical and Critical studies modules and you will gain industry awareness through Professional Practice Modules.
