Bath Spa University is proud to be named among the growing list of universities and organisations to achieve Fairtrade status, marking the latest step in its commitment to improve environmental and ethical performance.

A Fairtrade University is one that has made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade products. They ensure that Fairtrade products are available in as many places as possible and they raise awareness of Fairtrade and the benefits that it brings to producers in developing countries with students and staff.

Bath Spa’s refectory and students’ union provide Fairtrade food and snacks to the university community. The aim is to increase the availability and range of Fairtrade products bought and sold on campus year-on-year.

Ola Bankole, Bath Spa University’s Environmental Officer, said: “We are thrilled that the Fairtrade Foundation has awarded us the Fairtrade University status. The support and work of our refectory and students’ union was essential in achieving this accreditation and we also have to thank the students and staff who helped out recently during Fairtrade Fortnight.

“An important part of sustainable development is promoting fairness for the disadvantaged in our world and we all need to be increasingly aware of the impact of our purchasing decisions, as individuals and organisations.

“Choosing Fairtrade offers farmers and workers a better chance to work their way out of poverty, through fairer wages, safer conditions at work and a little extra, called the Fairtrade premium, to invest in projects to improve life for their whole communities.”
