Bath Spa University today welcomed Dr Warwick Carter, President of Columbia College Chicago. The visit builds on the University’s strategy to cement international relationships, and Dr Carter took the opportunity to view exciting work from a range of students studying creative subjects and explore future collaboration.
Both institutions share a history of very strong creative courses and are linked by a cornerstone partnership that has its roots in creative writing. This year there will be collaboration at a major US writing conference and joint projects running in film and media.
Dr Carter, who spent many years developing global education and live arts programmes for Walt Disney Entertainment, toured Bath Spa University’s beautiful campuses, art and design facilities, theatres and music studios. He also met with the new Vice-Chancellor Professor Christina Slade.
Dr Steve May, Head of Department of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, hosted the event and said: “We are delighted to be building on our excellent links with Columbia College. Our strong relationship with fiction writing has been an excellent starting point for partnership, holding public facing events at Bath Lit Fest and Chicago’s Story Week. We have also produced joint research papers at international conferences in the USA, UK and Australia. I look forward to further collaborative working in the future.”
The universities are building on these links with a virtual exchange based on joint projects in Year 1 of the Creative Media Practice undergraduate programme and student exchanges linked to curriculum projects in Year 3 of the same degree. Research links around trans media production are also being explored, with Columbia College staff presenting at Bath Spa University’s ‘Mix: Merging Intermedia X11’ conference in July 2012. The conference will explore transmedia writing and digital creativity.
