The start of 2012 sees a new direction for Bath Spa University as Professor Christina Slade takes the helm as Vice-Chancellor at a time of exciting changes.
In 2012 alone, the new Vice-Chancellor will lead the University through major changes to the campus during a world-class development project and navigate the greatest changes for a generation in the way UK universities are financed.
Professor Christina Slade brings a wealth of experience from her previous role as Dean of the Schools of Arts and of Social Sciences at City University London. She has been Dean of Humanities at Macquarie University (2003-8) and Professor of Media Theory at the University of Utrecht in which capacity she led a €1.25 million seven nation EU funded project entitled ‘Media and Citizenship: transnational television cultures reshaping political identities in the EU.’
Trained as a philosopher of logic and language, her research has focussed on issues of the media since 1990. Her monograph, ‘The Real Thing: doing philosophy with media’ (2002) examines the role of reason in the media, while ‘From Migrant to Citizen: testing language, testing culture’, (2010) jointly edited with Martina Möllering, looks at linguistic, legal and philosophical aspects of citizenship testing.
Professor Slade is delighted to be joining Bath Spa and is looking forward to her future in the city. She said: “There couldn’t be a better time to join Bath Spa University as we move through one of the most interesting times in higher education for quite some time. This is a wonderful opportunity to help the University pursue its ambitions, and to promote its reputation both at home and abroad.”
