How to Apply
Bath Spa University's Pre-sessional English Language course is designed to prepare with the skills you need to progess on to your Bath Spa University Bachelors or Masters degree.
If your first language is not English, or you haven't studied at a UK university before, the Pre-sessional English Language course can help you gain the language and academic skills you need to make the adjustment.
On successful completion of the course you will have gained:
* English language skills appropriate for progression to your academic degree
* Knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning styles and expectations of UK university study
* Increased knowledge of your academic subject
* Academic and study skills
* Research skills, critical thinking and analysis
* Increased confidence for success
Why study Pre-sessional English Language?
This course is suitable if:
* You want to begin your Bachelors or Masters studies at Bath Spa University in September/October intake
* You hold an offer of admission to Bath Spa University with an English language condition
* You hold an offer of admission to Bath Spa University without an English language condition but you want to further prepare yourself for your future studies
As a student of Bath Spa University you will have access to all the University facilities, including:
* Computing and IT facilities, including free internet and email access
* Library and learning centre
* the Students' Union
* Writing and Learning centre
Course structure
Depending on your initial level of English language, you can take a 6 week or 12 week course.
Courses run during the July to September.
Modules
You will study a modules covering a range of different skills and knowledge:
* Writing skills including note taking, paraphasing, topic sentences, thesis statements, summarising, cohesion, essay and report writing, academic style
* Listening skills including listenng for gist, listening in lectures, lecture practicals
* Reading skills including reading for gist, rapid reading, extracting for and against arguments from text, reading for writer's opinion
* Research skills including sourcing texts, collecting and analysing data, citation, literature reviews, synthesising text, analysing of essay and report titles
* Seminar skills including presentation, agreeing/disagreeing, team work, decision making, summarising discussions, leading discussions,
* Business language including business management, marketing, TQM, business tools and techniques
* Social and cultural English
Course assessment
Assessment methods may include essays, reports, podcasts, presentations, senimar activities and individual reflections.
Bath Spa University's Pre-sessional English course adopts a communicative, interactive approach to teaching and learning.
Teaching methods
You are encouraged to become active learners and move towards autonomy.
There is an emphasis on independent research, and you are encouraged to develop your own academic-subject related interests.
Classroom activities require you to work collaboratively in teams, small groups and pairs as well as individually, and you will also have opportunities to conduct research beyond the classroom in the local community.
This teaching and learning approach may be very different from your past experience. However, most students find this approach exciting and rewarding, and generally rise to face the new challenges with enthusiasm.
