Personal Statement

I am module coordinator for the following modules: Plantation to Partition: Ireland c.1603-c.1923; Age of the People: Europe c.1870-1990; Sport and the Modern World, c.1800-1995; Nineteenth-Century Britain and Ireland; Making Histories: Theories, Sources, Methods; The Great War: Conflict and Society; A Troubled History: Northern Ireland since 1922, as well as contributing to a number of other modules.

My research interests include police and crime in nineteenth-century Ireland; phrenology in Ireland; Irish sports history, 1860s-1900s, particularly cycling; Irish military history; Punch and post-Famine Ireland; the history of Meath; Fenianism; Percy French

My main non-academic pursuits are following the fortunes of Everton and Bath City football clubs. Nil satis nisi optimum.

I would welcome expressions of interest from potential PhD students in the following areas: Irish history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the Great War; sports history.
