Panayiota Demetriou

Personal statement

Yiota Demetriou is the PDRA (0.5) for Making Books: Creativity, Print Culture, and the Digital, at Bath Spa University. Additionally, she is an Associate Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies at Bath Spa.

Demetriou holds a PhD from University of Bristol’s Theatre Department, where she also lectured during her PhD. Her doctoral research investigated artistic approaches to presenting and staging oral histories, using participatory performance as a means of disseminating such materials within the setting of sound installations. She furthermore holds a Diploma in 35mm Filmmaking from New York Film Academy; a BA (Hons) in Theatre Studies from Queen Mary University of London, and an MA by Research from the University of Hull in applied and verbatim theatre.

Her performance project, Love Letters, has been touring in the EU for 5 years at renowned Festivals and Symposia: Tempting Failure, i-Docs, Performance and Live Art Platform and Latitude. As well as this she is a Performance art photographer and the initiator/artistic director of Performance and Live Art Platform Cyprus. Reviews of her live art work have been published by Vice in the Live Art Performance Almanac; and she has published a chapter and academic papers on documenting performance through oral history, sound installation and performance, as well as contested borders and artistic practices. Moreover, she has collaborated on the PSi Oral History project (2013- 2014), with Professor Heike Roms that was presented at the Shanghai Theatre Academy in 2014; and has worked as a freelance producer for Caitlin Shepherd’s piece Discord, exhibited at Somerset House for KCL’s event Paths to Utopia (2016), alongside being commissioned as an artist for the Kids Bath Literature Festival.
