Paul Davies

Personal statement

Paul is Vice-Provost (Learning and Teaching Quality) with responsibility for Academic Services, Library and Information Services, Careers and Enterprise, and Widening Participation. He is also Professor of Biogeography. Previously he was responsible for operational management with respect to quality assurance, research and research degree provision. He started at Bath Spa University as Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science, having moved to Bath after a spell as a post-doctoral researcher at The University of Hull (on an English Heritage funded wetland archaeology project). He subsequently became Head of Graduate Studies and Research Management before taking up his last two posts.

Paul previously taught undergraduate-level ecology, palaeoecology, biogeography and landscape heritage. He remains active in subject-based research, and has written or edited many articles/journals/monographs. These are mainly in environmental archaeology, archaeology, and both physical and cultural geography. He is a member of The Association for Environmental Archaeology (AEA) and a member of The Prehistoric Society. He was on the executive committee of The Severn Estuary Levels Research Committee (SELRC) as editor of 'Archaeology in the Severn Estuary' from 2001-2005 (volumes 12-15), and was an Executive Committee member of The UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) in 2004.

Paul is chair of theUniversity Learning and Teaching Committee, and the Programme Approval and Review sub-committee.

He is a member of the Academic Board, Academic Quality and Standards Committee, and the Collaborative Provision Committee.

He is also a member of the Vice-Chancellor's Executive Group.

Paul is also responsible for risk management on behalf of the University's Board of Governors'.

Current Scholarship

Subject-based themes include Molluscan ecology and palaeoecology, landscape development in British prehistory, Environmental archaeology and phenomenology. Particular interests in Mesolithic and Neolithic environmental change. Recent fieldwork has been focused on UK, France, Spain and Zambia, the last with the help of Royal Society funding.

Paul was awarded an AHRC Research Leave Award for some of the 2005-6 period to research and write a book entitled "Snails: archaeology, and landscape change", published by Oxbow Books.

Also themes relating to Graduate level education (particularly key skills and ethics) and management of graduate level provision.
