Centre for History and Culture

Based in the Department of Humanities at Bath Spa University, the Centre for History & Culture serves as a cross-disciplinary home for research scholars and postgraduate students conducting high-quality, original research in History and applied Heritage.
Historians in the Centre balance academic engagement with purposeful public involvement, especially through the broadcast media. Their research expertise, which stretches from the medieval to the modern and extends from South Asia and Western Europe to America, falls into two overarching research areas: Gender & Culture; and Conflict & Resolution. Within these themes, individual research fields include:
- sexuality and gender
- material culture
- political culture
- urban history (including the history of spa resorts)
- history of emotions
- music and sport
- pre-modern diplomacy
- espionage and counterespionage
- policing
- slavery and abolition
- race and migration
- international history (including the rise of political Islam)
