In the case of field-based programmes, starting from the first planning meetings, most part-time students (serving teachers) are invited to an introductory meeting at a local venue where the project is presented after which invitations to register are made.

Most field-based professional development opportunities are structured around a series of workshop sessions and group tutorials which support students in researching their own education interests and guide them through research procedures. These run over a specified period of time and can include extra tutorials to support accreditation tasks and assignments.

Example of a typical project

Here is an example of a typical project which was based on a cluster of schools wishing to address writing at KS 1.

The programme was developed from an initial series of meetings in which teachers from the cluster identified a number of concerns relating to writing at KS1. From this, the programme was devised and agreed and each session was a mixture of subject-based study and input and support for the research process. Inter-session tasks were agreed and extra tutorials arranged when required. Details of this project are given below:
