Undergraduate Research – Investigations in Educational Settings

Students on the second year (level 5) core module for Education Studies (Ed 5001 Issues in Education) have an opportunity to undertake a one day per week placement for a period of eight weeks in an education establishment. This is a development from our highly successful Ed 2006 and Ed 3006 modules, Investigation in School Experience which ran for a number of years. Whilst the majority of our students undertake this aspect of the module in school, we have extended the offer of placements to other education settings, reflecting the diversity of opportunities for teaching and learning available in the wider education sector.

Students work with the placement in order to gain professional experience and to bring their own skills and expertise to the setting. As part of their academic study they carry out a small scale investigation that connects their theoretical learning with the daily activity of the placement. Often students are invited to contribute to research projects already being undertaken by the setting. They collect data and write a report on their findings. The module helps them to employ the right research methods and to carry out a literature review on the topic. Students are encouraged to feedback findings to their placement.

At the end of the year there is a research conference for students, professionals and academic staff to celebrate the high level of undergraduate research at Bath Spa University conducted by our students at levels 4, 5 and 6 of the Education Studies programme.

This website is part of the dissemination process. At the end of the year we will provide some of the project reports which you are invited to read.

Module leaders for Ed 5001 are Andy Bord and Catherine Simon
