CERC - Education for Sustainable Development Conference (March 2008)
The Education for Sustainable Development Conference was held at Bath Spa University on 20th March, 2008. The conference was hosted by the School of Education in partnership with Envolve, a registered charity that works with schools, community groups, youth groups and businesses on projects that help change the way we live and work as well as benefiting the environment. The conference gave participants the opportunity to:
- find out about new ways for teaching about climate change and sustainability
- explore links with their own activities such as Eco-Schools
- hear about what other schools are doing, and what support is available
- identify ways of moving forward, including ideas for biodiversity projects
The programme for the day included:
- Welcome and Introduction from Robert Barratt, Bath Spa University and Jane Talbot from Envolve
- Presentation entitled Sustainable Schools, Eco-Schools and the Global Context of Climate Change by Andy Grant from the Castle Secondary School, Thornbury, South Gloucestershire
- School presentations: Claire Wall, Batheaston Primary School and f rom Broadlands School, Keynsham
- Workshops about teaching and tackling climate change included:
- Primary 'Rising to the Challenge' Sam Woodhouse, Somerset County Council Geography and Citizenship Consultant, gave a hands-on introduction to the approaches and resources in the new KS2 pack.
- Primary 'Climate Change in the Primary Classroom'. Sue Smailes, from Action Aid demonstrated the new Power Down resource, and members from Envolve suggested ideas of how this could be taken forward.
- Keith Brindle from Frome Community College looked at whole-school ways of approaching the climate change agenda and at developing student-led activity.
- Sustainable Learning Forum included:
- Eco-Schools news and information
- Pupils from Kingswood School presented their new website
- Grounds for Change: activities to encourage wildlife. A workshop given by Alison Logan, from Avon Wildlife Trust
