Dyslexia and Multilingualism: Identification and Intervention (March 2010- March 2012)

This project, run in partnership with the British Dyslexia Association, is supported by a grant of £469,967 from the Big Lottery Research Fund. It is exploring the support needs of bilingual learners who may be at risk of dyslexia. Children in 55 schools across England have been involved in a 15 week intervention programme designed to develop literacy skills and delivered by specifically trained Teaching Assistants with the collaboration of the school SENCos. The effectiveness of this programme is being evaluated through a mixed methodology design. including focus groups, questionnaires, interviews and quantitative data. Findings will inform the development of training for practitioners and of materials and strategies to support the children. Progress has been shared at a number of international conferences and findings will be published throughout 2012.
