Centre for Research into Inclusion and Vulnerable Learners (CRIVL)
Background
The establishment of CRIVL in 2008 builds on work over recent years by an emerging group of researchers in the Schools of Education and Social Sciences (now the School of Science, Society and Management) working within the fields of inclusion and vulnerable learners (particularly those with dyslexia).
CRIVL's research focuses upon the development of interprofessional and interdisciplinary networks across children's and other agencies. The Centre is unique in its drive to:
- explore shifting policy and cultures of integrated services
- identify theoretical perspectives arising from the drive for social and educational inclusivity and the Every Child Matters Agenda
- bring together researchers from frameworks beyond education to collaborate in the examination of issues such as, race, disability, poverty and health within a multi-cultural society.
Aims
CRIVL aims to:
1. Share and develop research with all those involved with vulnerable learners;
2. Respond to the drive for evidence based practice within the areas of social and educational inclusion through:
- The development of research capacity and co-operative research across Bath Spa University.
- The development of research capacity within partnerships with integrated children's services and other organisations dealing with vulnerable learners.
- The exploration of partnerships with researchers in other Higher Education Institutions.
- Supporting the development of research students through undergraduate/master/PHD pathways in topics related to vulnerable learners and inclusion.
- Fostering research and dissemination at all levels within the university and encouraging publications and ways of sharing research within and beyond the Bath Spa community
- Provision of an evidence base to underpin university teaching, professional, interprofessional and other forms of education and training
- Bidding for research funding from a range of public and private bodies
In keeping with the interdisciplinary teamwork focus of its research, CRIVL employs a distributed management framework to build up grassroots perspectives, co-ordinated by a leadership team to ensure communication and structure.
