Postgraduate Study

Postgraduate study at Bath Spa University has a number of unique attractions. Our postgraduate awards have developed over the years - often with invaluable input from experts within associated industries - to provide opportunities for advanced study that are both academically challenging and vocationally relevant. The University operates within a vigorous research culture in which students undertaking MPhil and PhD degrees excel, undertaking work at the cutting edge of their fields.

The University has established an enviable reputation for the quality of its teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Our courses are of the highest quality, taught by a team of scholars and researchers who are experts in their own fields. Bath Spa University is a thriving academic community in which support for each individual student is given a very high priority. Around 25% of our 4,200 students are following postgraduate, professional development and research programmes.

Why Undertake Postgraduate Study?

In recent years participation in higher education has increased substantially and more and more students are able to complete their education with a first degree. In this context a postgraduate qualification is becoming increasingly attractive to many students. For some career paths - teaching, for example - further study is a requirement, and a significant number of our postgraduate students are following Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) courses. Please note that the Graduate School does not deal with PGCE courses. For others a postgraduate qualification gives an 'edge' in a highly competitive jobs market, and a number of our taught Master's courses have a highly vocational focus.

Other students find the main motivation for postgraduate study in a deep-rooted interest in their subject.

As a postgraduate student you will derive considerable personal satisfaction from pursuing your studies to postgraduate level, and you may decide to extend your research further still and join our growing body of research students undertaking doctorate level work.

Options for Postgraduate Study.

There are different options for postgraduate study within the University College.

Taught Programmes: These lead to the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) or Master's degree (MSc or MA).
Research Programmes: These lead to the award of MPhil and PhD.
