Cultural Studies
Cultural Studies is a challenging academic subject, which enables a distinctive perspective on modern cultural life, by using modes of analysis that cross existing disciplinary boundaries. Cultural Studies makes use of traditional academic sources whilst having developed and continuing to develop its own unique 'interdisciplinary' approaches, that enable the understanding of a vast array of social, cultural, political and personal practices and phenomena. It studies, with equal sensitivity, mainstream culture, marginal activities, 'high' and 'low' culture, the 'extreme' and (allegedly) inexplicable, to the 'everyday' and often unnoticed aspects of personal and cultural life. Cultural Studies particularly pays attention to the areas of life that have often been ignored, such as popular fiction, soap opera, horror films, TV ads, magazines, pop music, the internet, and the cultural ramifications of such taken-for-granted features of life as love, desire and friendship, as well as reassessing the 'conventional' in light of these new and expanded perspectives.
At Bath Spa, Cultural Studies is an exciting and fast-growing programme of study, that has both its own dedicated team, but which also draws on the wide range of expertise across the School (from Historical Studies to Media Communications and the study of New Technologies). Cultural Studies at Bath Spa has a particular commitment to developing the important connections between cultural theory, popular culture, the cultural studies of film and practical aspects of cultural life, in relation both to the arts and to the vast range of 'everyday' life-styles proliferating in the modern world. Culture, Film and Media are the fastest growing areas in academia today (these areas currently top the list of employment opportunities for graduates). The subject appeals to students from all backgrounds and develops the critical, imaginative and interpretative skills necessary for life in the twenty first century. It allows entry into a variety of career pathways and reinvigorates your critical relationship with the human world.
