Study of Religions
Bath Spa has an excellent reputation for Study of Religions. The Subject is offered as a Major, Joint or Minor component of an Honours Degree. The subject is located within the Department of Humanities, alongside History and Philosophy and Ethics. We explore a diverse range of living religious traditions which have shaped human society in the past and continue to have an impact on contemporary individuals and societies throughout the world. Areas covered include Paganism and New Age, New Religious Movements, and Japanese Religions as well as the 'world religions' such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. We offer first hand experience of religious communities through placements and visits.
Students continue to find us a friendly staff team with time for individuals, and we have students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds including many mature students with non-traditional qualifications. The religions we cover include those needed for teaching Religious Education in Secondary or Primary schools, but as well as teaching, our graduates enter a wide variety of careers especially those dealing with people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Students enjoy our courses and we received an excellent grade of 23/24 in the QAA Teaching Quality Assessment.
Research specialisms of staff include Paganism and the New Age, South Asian Religions (including Buddhism and Hinduism), Philosophy of Religions, Ethics, Gender and Sexuality and Religions in Education.
The aim of the Humanities Department is to pursue excellence in teaching, learning, research and all other activities appropriate to an internationally recognised University.
- As the name 'Study of Religions' indicates, the subject at Bath Spa has no religious agenda and is concerned only to foster the academic approach to the subject. We have an open and exploratory approach to religions, which exist in the world and have significance in people's lives.
- The department actively promotes research into a variety of religions and topics within the broad field of Religious Studies and offers supervision to MPhil / PhD.
