Why study Business and Management?
Budding entrepreneur? CEO of the future? Marketing Director in the making? Whatever your aspirations, our Business and Management course will give you a good grounding in the theory and practice of modern business. Along the way you’ll develop the core skills you need to excel in all kinds of businesses and start to build a clear picture of exactly where those skills could take you.
We’ll help you develop as a person to achieve your potential through teaching you about business and how it works. You’ll graduate with potential for employment in different businesses; this could be an organisation, the private or public sector, a charity or possibly your own business. We aim to give you the skills to apply your knowledge in a wide range of situations in any sector.
You’ll have flexibility to choose modules that are of particular interest to you. You can also bring in modules from areas outside your course if you want to explore issues around a particular ‘theme’, such as sustainability or global affairs.
- Year 1
Gain a broad understanding of today’s business environment – from the context that organisations operate in through to trends in economic thinking and the importance of data in business. Modules will cover topics such as organisations and the business environment; economics and globalisation; managing data.
- Year 2
Focus on the inner workings of businesses, use business techniques to solve problems and start developing the skills that employers look for. Modules include a key module in creativity and innovation and a compulsory module in financial accounting.
Optional topics include: human resource management; marketing, information and operations management; and international business. At the end of the year, you can choose to embark on a ten-month business placement or a 10-week summer placement – applying what you’ve learnt so far in the real world.
- Year 3
Develop and explore your business learning and focus on the role of management. Undertake an in-depth business research project in your specialist area. You’ll also have a chance to set up a business on your own or with fellow students. Other topics to explore include: managing sustainability; marketing for managers; new trends in management; and strategic human resource management.
You'll be assessed in a wide range of ways that will test your business knowledge and management skills. These could include presentations, work related projects, group-work, computer based simulations, podcasts, examinations, essays, videos and business reports.
You’ll have the opportunity to study in a wide range of locations around the world. Our students have completed Erasmus+ and Exchange programs in a variety of countries including Holland, Belgium and China.
Business community projects
We give you the opportunity to work with regional and national businesses in and around Bath. You’ll be working on live project briefs, helping organisations find creative solutions to their business issues.
Depending on your pathway and the modules you study, you can gain accreditation by professional bodies and get exemption from professional exams.
Work placements, industry links and internships
In addition to the business community projects, you’ll have fantastic opportunities to work closely with business and industry through placements, projects and internships.
Do you have entrepreneurial flair? Have you created a product that people will buy? BathSparks has given away over £10,000 in funding to student ideas in 2015/16 and we're looking to give even more this year. Stay up-to-date on our blog.
We offer variety in the way we teach: sometimes we will set you problems so you can find the answers for yourself, sometimes we will lecture. Most modules use a mix of lectures and small group seminars. There is a good blend of online activities using our Virtual Learning Environment, Minerva. We invite business leaders in to talk about their experience and we arrange visits to local businesses. All of our teaching methods facilitate your development as a self directed learner.
You’ll be given personal support in your study – we are a friendly team of academics who are committed to helping students achieve their goals.

Business and Management Student Reviews
Graduated in 2012
Now: Content Editor & Head of Public Relations
Stagweb - www.stagweb.co.uk
"I was originally hired in an admin role by StagWeb, realised my interest in marketing and writing, and promoted me to Content Editor and Copy Writer. Following that, I was put in charge of the company's Public Relations (which had drawn directly from lessons I learnt on the marketing module) to finding a 'lad' calendar for our newsletters, to talking to leading journalists in the wedding industry."
"I would highly recommend studying Business and Management at Bath Spa University. All of the tutors and lecturers have been wonderfully friendly and really are there when you need them. The hands-on experience and help every step of the way is superb, especially when it comes to leaving University and trying to establish yourself in the job market. The University itself is beautiful and an inspiring place to study and Bath is one of the safest and most exciting cities around. Overall, if you're going to BSU you're guaranteed a friendly atmosphere, terrific staff and an excellent set-up for the world of employment."

They employ me to sit in house with Bauer Media (one of their several London based publishers). Bauer Media publishes Celeb Weeklies such as Heat, Closer, Grazia and other titles such as FHM, Zoo and Empire."
"BSU Business & Management is a course that I would recommend without a doubt. There is constant support and the course is not overcrowded by any means. There is room for everyone to shine and build strong relationships with both lecturers and colleagues. If you want to learn all aspects of the business world, have constant support and build strong relationships then I would highly recommend the Business & Management course."
Now: Business Consultant at Nine Feet Tall - www.ninefeettall.com
I chose to do my Business degree at Bath Spa University because of the quality of education it provides; an achievement which can be attributed to its brilliant lecturers. The University
benefits from being quite small so it can concentrate on its core function of teaching and
educating its students.
The Business and Management team are very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and dedicated to helping you achieve your potential. When deciding what career path to take my lecturers were very willing to offer their advice and expertise on various industries and job roles. Since graduating in 2012, I went straight on to a graduate scheme with a Bath based Business Consultancy called Nine Feet Tall, whom I met at a careers event at the University. From day 1 I was using many of the skills and business principles that I learnt on my degree and have found many of topics covered on the course to be very practical and transferable into business consulting and the commercial world. One of things I love most about my job as a consultant is that it allows me to work in a wide range of management disciplines, which is also one of things I loved most about my degree. My degree and development at Bath Spa University has been essential to me achieving a place on a graduate scheme and career in consulting.
Now: Area Sales manager, Batemans
"The Enterprise module enhanced my entrepreneurial spirit and enabled me to explore numerous possibilities including working for myself. One extremely important lesson I took from this module is: If you want something, go and get it."
"I highly recommend Bath Spa University to prospective students due to the support provided from the tutors. They provide informative, clear and encouraging guidance with whatever route you choose to pursue."
"Overall, Bath Spa University provides everything from friendly, motivational support through to beautiful grounds to help inspire your creative imagination."
Now: Associate Director, Traded Products Legal at UBS Investment Bank - www.ubs.com
"Upon graduating from Bath Spa I was offered a year’s internship with UBS AG Investment Bank based in the USA, which I’ve just finished. I’ve now returned to the UK and am working for the bank in London as a Legal Negotiator for Traded products."
"Attending Bath Spa University was the best decision I have made in my life."
"The lecturers offer a wealth of knowledge which is communicated to students in a simple yet effective style, which not only enables students to take in the information but also challenges the students’ thinking. Lecturers are always happy to offer support and further help when needed. A friendly and welcoming atmosphere from both staff and students alike made the University a joy to visit each and every day."
