Why study Business and Management (Marketing)?

Marketing Director in the making? Budding entrepreneur? Whatever your aspirations, our Business and Management (Marketing) course will give you a good grounding in the theory and practice of modern marketing. Along the way you’ll develop the core skills you need to excel in all kinds of businesses and start to build a clear picture of exactly where those skills could take you.

Course structure

We’ll help you develop as a person to achieve your potential through teaching you about marketing and how it works. You’ll graduate with potential for employment in different businesses; this could be an organisation, the private or public sector, a charity or possibly your own business. We aim to give you the skills to apply your knowledge in a wide range of situations in any sector.
Following a marketing pathway, you’ll develop specialist marketing skills from broad based marketing principles to creating a social media marketing campaign and how to market a brand internationally.

You can also bring in modules from areas outside the marketing pathway if you want to explore issues around a particular ‘theme’, such as sustainability or global affairs.

Modules

  • Year 1
Gain a broad understanding of today’s business environment – from the context that organisations operate in through to trends in economic thinking and the importance of data in business. Modules will cover topics such as organisations and the business environment; economics and globalisation; managing data.

  • Year 2
Focus on the inner workings of businesses, use business techniques to solve problems and start developing the skills that employers look for. Modules include a key module in creativity and innovation in marketing, a compulsory module in financial accounting and a required module in the marketing business.
Optional topics include: human resource management; information and operations management; festivals and events management; and international business. At the end of the year, you can choose to embark on a ten-month business placement or a 10-week summer placement – applying what you’ve learnt so far in the real world.

  • Year 3
Develop and explore your business learning and focus on the role of international marketing management. Undertake an in-depth business research project in marketing. You’ll also have a chance to set up a business on your own or with fellow students. Other topics to explore include: managing sustainability; organisational strategy; new trends in management; creating and hosting festivals and events; and strategic human resource management.

What students say...

"The Business and Management course has developed skills and qualities that I am using on a daily basis in my work. I loved everything about the course. The group work was great - very challenging at times, but when it went right it was amazing. The mentoring from the Business and Management staff was faultless - all are very approachable and genuinely have your best interests at heart. By having the opportunity to work on real problems and case studies we, as a group of students, produced a business plan for a gym on campus which is actually being implemented now. I mean - what an awesome way to leave a mark on your university."
