Subject Reviews

Subject Review Results

Between 1992 and 2002, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and then the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) carried out 'Subject Reviews' to evaluate the quality of educational provision on a subject basis. Taught programmes of study at all levels were reviewed. The reviewers were typically academic colleagues from other university institutions. Before 1995, the system was to make a judgement on the scale 'Unsatisfactory', 'Satisfactory', 'Excellent' overall for the review. Under this system BSUC History was found 'Satisfactory', and English and Environmental Studies 'Excellent'. From 1995 onwards (i.e. Sociology and the subjects succeeding it in the table below), reviews resulted in a 'graded profile' of scores for each subject about:

Each element scored from 1 (low) to 4 (high). BSU subjects never scored below 3 in any element of any assessment. Our average score was 22/24. For student support and guidance, we scored 4 in every review.
