Green Focus Challenge
Welcome
to Bath Spa's new campaign, the Green Focus Challenge. The campaign will run
from October to June each year, and will reward teams across the University
who take positive actions to reduce their environmental
impact.
All teams who sign up will receive a welcome pack filled with goodies
from a t-shirt for their Environment Champion, to notebooks made from
recycled paper, and USB sticks for everyone to transport documents around without
printing. There will also be a reward of at least £100 for every team that
completes the Challenge.
We
can provide training, help and support to get your team going with the
Challenge, and to make progress with the Challenge.
Did You Know?:
- Switching off our PC monitors while we're away from our desks could save up to 25 tons CO2 and £6,000 per year;
- Recycling 70% of all our waste would save almost 100 tons CO2 and over £30,000 per year (compared to doing nothing);
- Reducing paper use by 10% could save 5 tons CO2 and over £5,000 per year;
- If all car drivers car-shared we could save more than 400 tons CO2 and £150,000 per year.
What We Will Be Looking For At Each Stage:
Getting ready...
- Step 1: Having 'environment' as an agenda item at team meetings;
- Step 2: Having a designated Environment Champion and/or Paper Sheriff;
- Step 3: Demonstrate awareness of Bath Spa's key environmental targets;
- Step 4: Know where to find information on the environment webpage;
Getting stuck in...
- Step 5: Be committed to recycling and waste minimisation;
- Step 6: Have an agreed procedure for energy saving and switching off electrical equipment;
- Step 7: Be aware of the sustainable travel options available in BSU;
- Step 8: Use the Sustainable Purchasing Guide, and follow the Office Move Procedure;
The X-Factor...!?! This is extra recognition for teams who come up with innovative solutions for addressing an environmental issue. This isn't compulsory, and is your chance to tell us what else you're doing to be green!
How Prizes Will Be Awarded:
- Teams that successfully complete all eight steps will be rewarded with a share of the £1500 prize fund.
- Every team will receive £100, with the minimum team size being 8-10 people (small teams can collaborate with others nearby). Larger teams with over 10 people will receive an additional £5 per team member.
- For example, a team with 15 members of staff will receive £100 + £25.
- Departments can choose how to spend their winnings, in any way that benefits their department or another part of the University.
How To Get Involved:
The first step is to look at the Green Focus Challenge Guide (.doc), which describes the criteria in detail. Your registration pack will include a simplified list of these requirements as a checklist (.pdf), helping you track your progress as you tick off completed steps.
Then download and complete the registration form (.doc). Talk to your team to make sure everyone is willing to take part. Finally, ask your manager to email your completed registration form to environment@bathspa.ac.uk.
