2.8 - Workshop Safety Guidance
- Students must never work alone or unsupervised in any Workshop;
- All staff and students must ensure that they understand the Fire Instructions and are aware of the position and operation of Emergency Exits;
- Storage of all bags, cases and coats must be out of the way, so that they neither obstruct access or egress, nor present a trip hazard in the working area;
- Operatives must only work with apparatus/machines on which they have received training and have been passed as being competent to use, by the staff responsible;
- Eating, drinking and smoking are strictly forbidden in all workshops;
- Protective clothing must be worn for all practical work where required by the operation. Non-availability is NO excuse;
- Safety Devices and Protective Equipment must always be used wherever provided;
- No procedure must be carried out if the necessary protection is not available;
- All procedures, practical techniques/operations and processes along with their associated hazards, must be fully understood by operatives before commencing work. If there is any doubt, assistance must be obtained from supervisory staff;
- All chemicals must be treated with respect and COSHH Risk Assessment Sheets always be readily available, consulted and understood before chemicals are used;
- The location of the nearest First Aid staff to the area in which you are working and how to contact them in an emergency must be ascertained before work is started;
- Workshop should always be left in a safe and tidy condition as one would hope to find it yourself. Machines must be left safely and "locked off" where appropriate.
Workshop Safety Depends On Individual Vigilance And Good Housekeeping
- All users are reminded that they have a statutory duty to follow all safety procedures and have due regard for not only their own safety, but also that of all other persons who could be affected by their acts or omissions;
- Users are also expected to co-operate with the University in the implementation of all safety requirements and not to interfere with or misuse anything which has been provided in the interest of health and safety.
