2.10 - Safety Guide For Domestic Staff
Electrical Appliances
- Always unwind the leads completely and check the cable for damage
- Check plug before use as follows:
- Is the cover cracked?
- Is the cable properly clamped in the plug? - inside wires should not be seen
- If in doubt about the safety of equipment do not use and report any defects immediately to your supervisor
- Move plug regularly from socket to socket - never stretch the cable
- Empty vacuum cleaners - Regularly
- When using floor polishers or scrubbing machines, always work with the lead plugged in behind you
- Never leave electrical cleaning equipment switched on and unattended
- Always rewind flex after use - with a scrubbing machine unplug and then clean the cable with a damp cloth. Remove hoses from vacuum cleaners and store tidily in cupboards.
Cleaning Materials
- Always read instructions before use and use according to directions/instructions
- Never mix chemicals
- Only decant chemicals into properly labelled containers
- Always wear protective clothing where necessary, eg. rubber gloves, plastic apron.
Please note: Goggles are also supplied and should be used when cleaning ovens or de-scaling toilets.
Always display appropriate signs as follows:
- Wet floor cones
- Toilet/bathroom closed for cleaning
- Always remove signs after cleaning is completed and floors are dry.
General Safety Points
- Take great care how you lift. Be sure you know how to lift safely so as not to damage your back. First check the load before any lifting. Never move a load which is too heavy by yourself. Keep your back straight and bend at the knees. Always get help if needed.
- Always flush toilets after cleaning with chemicals
- Never block fire exits and report immediately any that are obstructed
- Keep labelled "fire doors" closed, unless you are actually cleaning the door.
- Remember that the University operates a No Smoking policy in all buildings and up to 10 metres from buildings
