7.7 Action At Newton Park Halls of Residence for Security and Resident Tutors
Information For Security and Resident Tutors if the Fire Alarm is activated.
The Resident Tutors are the Fire Wardens for their Hostels. In the event of a fire in a hostel:
The Security Lodge Guard will be alerted by the monitoring station and then checks the Fire Panel in the Security Lodge to ascertain the location of a fire.
A Security Guard then goes to that location's Assembly Point to liaise with the
Resident tutor to establish if
there is a definite fire and if so compile a "Situation Report". In the
absence of both the Warden and Senior Student, the Security Guard attending
the hostel that has had the fire alarm activated, takes on the duty of the
Fire Warden. Fire Wardens have been issued with a whistle in order to
improve communications during fire evacuations. The use of a whistle will
assist those unfamiliar the location of the Fire Assembly points i.e.
contractors, visitors and new students.
On arrival at the Fire Assembly Point a Fire Warden will sound three sharp
blasts on the whistle to gain the attention of those evacuating the
building. Those exiting the building should safely make their way to the
Fire Warden at the Assembly Point, and await further instructions. At this
stage any useful information can be passed onto the Fire Warden.
When it is safe to re enter the building a Fire Warden will sound one single
extended blast on the whistle - this is the signal that it is safe to renter
the building. You should not re enter the buildings until you have been
given the signal to do so. In the event of a real fire, this signal will
come from the Senior Fire Officer in attendance.
This Should State:-
- The precise location of the fire
- Any particular hazards to be aware of eg. Electrical equipment on fire
- If any people who are still likely to be within the confines of the hostel building, including any who are trapped or incapacitated in any way.
On arrival of the Fire Service Personnel on site, the Security Lodge Guard will direct them to the hostel indicated on the panel, where they will liaise with the Warden/Security at that location.
The Senior Fire Officer will receive the "Situation Report" from the staff at the location and act accordingly.
Security will at all times assist the Warden to keep the hostel occupants at the Assembly Point and out of the way of Fire Service crews.
Once the Senior Fire Officer has proclaimed the buildings safe, all occupants will be allowed back inside.
Be careful. Remember people cannot be replaced, buildings can!
