7.8 Actions for dealing with the fire alarm at Bankside, Burdalls Yard, Culverhay, Corsham Court and Dartmouth Avenue
Bankside
Bankside is a multi-storey student hall of residence located in Harley Street off Julian Road in Bath (approximately 5 miles from Newton Park and the support of the security staff). The building is constructed with a central staircase with multi occupancy flats either side of the stairs. The central staircase provides the only means of access and egress from the upper floors. The alarm system has been designed as an L2 system with detectors in escape routes, adjoining rooms and kitchens. There are no Staff Wardens, or security officers based at Bankside, although there are Senior Students who have some formal responsibilities (the role of the senior student may be replaced by Resident Tutors for Sep 2011) If the alarm is activated at Bankside, the Security Lodge at Newton Park will receive a call from the monitoring station asking if the fire service is required. Because of the distance from the site and the time that it would take to investigate, the Fire Service will be asked to attend. A Security Officer will drive to Bankside and meet the fire service on site.
Burdall’s Yard
Burdall’s Yard is a former nightclub, located on the A4 leading out of Bath (a couple of hundred metres from Bath Fire Station). The alarm system is a stand alone system that is managed by the local staff, who act in the capacity of Fire Wardens. In the event of the alarm being activated all occupants will evacuate the building and make their way to the designated Assembly Point, whilst the Fire Wardens investigate whether or not the Fire Service is required. If a fire is discovered the Fire Wardens will call 999 directly.
Culverhay
BSU’s Culverhay site is an annexe of Culverhay School, and the fire panel is linked to a monitoring station. If an activation is received, the station will contact Security at Newton Park, who will then call the appropriate emergency service.
Corsham Court
Corsham Court, BSU’s centre for Post Graduate Studies has a complex arrangement of fire panels. The key staff at Corsham are Ron George who is the Head of School and Area Safety Manager, Manny Auld who is the Caretaker, and Tom Durnford who is the Technician and General Assistant. The owner / landlord of the property James Methuen-Campbell retains a section of the house as his private living accommodation. If the alarm is activated in Main House the monitoring station will contact Manny Auld to confirm whether or not there is a requirement for the fire service. Manny Auld and James Methuen Campbell are also alerted via a pager. Manny will investigate the activation and decide whether there is a requirement for the fire service to attend. Outside of day time hours the fir service will attend. There are two other stand alone systems at Corsham Court, one in The Barn and one in the Gatehouse / Riding School. If the alarm is activated by the detector heads, or a break glass point, an audible alarm can be heard inside and outside of the buildings. It is then the responsibility of The Caretaker to establish if it is a false alarm or a genuine fire. It should be noted that The Barn and The Riding School are equipped with soundproof booths for the purpose of recording. To ensure that individuals are aware the requirement to evacuate the booths are fitted with flashing beacons. In addition Fire Wardens will sweep these areas as they exit the building, knocking and opening doors where safe to do so.
Dartmouth Avenue
The Dartmouth Avenue site in Oldfield Park is a shared with BANES printing works, and activation of the alarm in either area requires the evacuation of both organisations. The fire panel is located in the lobby of the Bath Spa University buildings and is managed by a BSU Security guard who is on site during daylight hours. Should the alarm sound the monitoring station will contact security who will advise whether or not emergency service are required.
