Our Environment

We have two outstandingly beautiful campuses: Newton Park and Sion Hill. As well as providing all the facilities you'd expect from a modern University, both campuses offer magnificent surroundings enriched with English history.

The larger campus, at Newton Park, is set in an historic landscape four miles west of Bath and is leased from the Duchy of Cornwall - making the Prince of Wales our landlord. Our other campus, Sion Hill, is located in Bath where the University has freehold ownership of a large 1960s purpose built complex.

Given the outstanding beauty and historical importance of our two campuses, we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously indeed. We feel strongly that higher education has an important role in achieving sustainability and in protecting the environment. As such, we manage our campuses in ways that are sympathetic to the environment and, in the case of Newton Park, consistent with the environmental policies of the Duchy of Cornwall. The extensive parkland is entirely pesticide-free and operates on organic principles.

Our Environmental Commitment

Bath Spa University is committed to minimising the impact of our activities on the environment and making this a more sustainable place to work and study.

Our ultimate aim is to achieve ISO 14001, which is the internationally recognised Environmental Management System (EMS) standard. Through developing co-ordinated EMS procedures we can identify aspects of our organisation that impact on the environment, understand which environmental laws are relevant, produce targets for improvement and a management programme to achieve them.

We are currently taking part in an exciting EcoCampus pilot scheme, aimed at helping Higher Education institutions implement an Environmental Management System. EcoCampus covers all aspects of the University's operations, including waste management; energy and water; transport; emissions and discharges; construction and refurbishment; sustainable purchasing; and community involvement.
