Code of Practice
Students
JOBS@bathspa will make information about appropriate job vacancies/placement opportunities available to registered students. Students are required to register on line in order to use the service. Information will be displayed on notice boards and on the Bath Spa web site. On occasions we may contact suitable candidates directly about particular vacancies.
JOBS@bathspa will not disclose the names, addresses or telephone numbers of students without their permission and shall conform to the requirements of the Data Protection Act and any subsequent related Acts.
JOBS@bathspa will provide students with employment information, which is as accurate and up-to-date as possible. All information is given in good faith and based on information provided by the employer to JOBS@bathspa. Students must confirm for themselves that this information is accurate.
It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they have the relevant skills and qualifications required for a particular post before applying for it.
Students must notify JOBS@bathspa if they have found work immediately giving appropriate details of their employment.
JOBS@bathspa will provide information about employment issues e.g. tax and when appropriate, direct the student to other sources such as the careers service or academic schools, which offer more specialised information and guidance.
If a student is dissatisfied with the employer and believes them to be in breach of employment law, JOBS@bathspa will seek to give appropriate guidance. In such circumstances, it is solely the responsibility of the student to bring any legal action against an employer.
Students requiring information/guidance on a range of issues not directly relating to a particular vacancy, e.g. writing a CV, information about financial support, will be directed to a more appropriate source, usually within the university.
It is assumed that any student who takes up a placement opportunity advertised through JOBS@bathspa will be doing so on an extracurricular basis. If it transpires that a placement opportunity could meet the formal requirements of a student's course, then it is the student's responsibility, before starting the placement to notify the relevant academic staff in order to ensure that a formal approval process takes place.
Any registered student who fails without good reason to attend a pre-arranged employer interview or who otherwise abuses the service may be removed from JOBS@bathspa register.
Students are expected to be aware of their own study commitments and not to take employment or a placement that will adversely affect their academic work. Our guide for employers suggests full time students work no more than 15 hours per week, except during vacations.
If you have any complaints or comments about JOBS@bathspa student employment service in the first instance please contact the JOBS@bathspa Co-ordinator.
Employers
JOBS@bathspa will endeavour to assist employers in locating suitable student employees but reserves the right not to advertise an employer's vacancy.
The employer must make clear the nature of the work/placement offered and specify any necessary skills required, the proposed wages and other terms. If they are able, the employer should also state the number and distribution of hours to be worked and the date that the employment will end.
It is the responsibility of the employer to let all candidates know the result of an application as soon as possible and also to inform JOBS@bathspa.
The employer should be aware of student's study obligations and as a guide should not ask full time students to work in excess of 15 hours per week, except during vacations or other periods when a student does not have the usual pressure of study.
It is the duty of the employer to meet all statutory legal requirements with regard to students employed via JOBS@bathspa. In particular the employer is reminded of the following:
- Payment of the national minimum wage;
- Working time directive legislation including holiday entitlement;
- Payment of National Insurance contributions, tax, or where appropriate, submission of Declaration of Income forms [P38(s)] to the Inland Revenue;
- Adherence to health and safety regulations and provision of adequate insurance - Employer's and Public Liability Insurance
- Adherence to The Children's Act;
- Compliance with legislation against discrimination in employment on basis of disability, ethnic origin, gender etc and with good practice in respect of non-discrimination on the grounds of age.
The employer shall satisfy themselves as to the suitability of any employees and shall be responsible for taking up any references and checking of qualifications provided by the employee before engaging the student.
If an employer finds that a student recruited via JOBS@bathspa does not fulfill reasonable expectations, bearing in mind the job specification notified, JOBS@bathspa will re-advertise the vacancy and endeavour to put forward a replacement, if requested by the employer.
Where any charge is to be levied on an employer using JOBS@bathspa, the amount, its purpose and the method of payment will be stated clearly, in writing, when the vacancy is notified.
JOBS@bathspa reserves the right not to advertise vacancies it considers unsuitable for students, and to refuse to advertise further vacancies from any company which breaches this code.
