Emma Chillman

BA (Hons)  Commercial Music 2005 to 2008

Worked for The Old Mill Hotel as Restaurant Supervisor

In the summer of 2006 Emma was recruited to work for The Old Mill Hotel as part of their waiting staff in the restaurant, after seeing the full time summer vacation role advertised in the Job Shop.  After only a month she was promoted to be the Restaurant Supervisor, responsible for the smooth running of the restaurant including when it is used for functions such as weddings.

Emma had continued to work in this role on a part time and full time vacation basis ever since.  The hotel is very popular for weddings and is very busy during the peak tourist season.  Emma has had to develop her interpersonal skills to handle difficult customers diplomatically and also be confident enough to delegate to the permanent staff who she manages.

on the job training was provided by the management team, which was really useful. I've learnt how to motivate a team and understand the importance of giving clear instructions in order to communicate effectively to get the job done as well as possible. The management team are really supportive of student staff; they always try to be as flexible as possible when it comes to shifts.  I like going to work as it can be a refreshing change from university work - something completely different with a different set of people.  I often feel that it actually helps me to re-focus on my studies after I've taken a break from them by working!

Emma's long term aim is to be a songwriter, or to be involved with music event management.  (She was asked to write a song for a member of staff at the hotel which was performed at the Christmas do!)
