- RefWorks: web-based software that allows you to store your essay references (from books, websites, e-journals), then automatically create bibliographies in all the common referencing formats (Harvard, Numeric, etc).
E-books
- Performing arts e-books: a rapidly expanding collection of over 190 books, giving you 24/7 access to some of your modules' key texts. Includes titles about acting, playwrights, musicals, Greek tragedy, theatre directors, etc. Unlike Google Books you can always access the entire book!
- Library catalogue: e-book titles can also be accessed from the library catalogue, where they are labelled as an electronic resource. Use the Advanced search option to find specific titles.
- Oxford English Dictionary: comprehensive English dictionary. An unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history and pronunciation of over half a million words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international sources.
E-journals
If you're looking for a particular e-journal title, use our Find e-journals search engine. Note that a single e-journal title may be held within several different e-journal collections.
If you're looking for a particular topic or keyword, you must decide which of the following e-journal collections to search within (you cannot currently search all our e-journal collections at the same time):-
- E-journals (EBSCO): This site provides online access to over 140 journal titles, hand-picked by BSU academic staff for their research value, eg New Theatre Quarterly, TDR: Drama Review, Theatre Journal, Theatre Research International, Theatre Survey.
- Film and Television Literature (EBSCO): 115 full-text journals about cinema & television, including both industry magazines and academic titles, eg Adaptation, Hollywood Reporter, Hollywood Scriptwriter, Journal of Adaptation in Film & Performance, Journal of British Cinema & Television, Journal of Screenwriting, Sight and Sound, Variety. FTL also holds 90+ e-books.
- International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance (EBSCO): a collection of more than 160 full-text journals, with an emphasis on theatrical production and performance, including American Drama, Brecht Yearbook, Canadian Theatre Review, Comedy Studies, Communications from the International Brecht Society, Comparative Drama, Contemporary Theatre Review, Costume: Journal of the Costume Society, Eugene O'Neill Review, Ibsen Studies, International Journal of Performance Art & Digital Media, Journal of Beckett Studies, Live Design, Modern Drama, Mime Journal, PAJ: Performing Arts Journal, Research in Drama Education, Sondheim Review, Studies in Theatre & Performance, TD&T: Theatre Design & Technology, TDR: Drama Review, Theater, Women & Performance. IBTD also holds more than 360 e-books.
- JSTOR: contains many relevant journals for Drama and Performing Arts, with a particular emphasis on literary studies, eg Asian Theatre Journal, Classical Quarterly, The Journal of Hellenic Studies, PAJ: Performing Arts Journal, Shakespeare Quarterly, TDR: Drama Review, Theatre Journal.
Online video collection
- Theatre in video: access to some 500 hours of online streaming video, covering a wide range of topics from productions of Shakespeare plays to interviews with Lee Strasberg. The collection starts in the 1930s and you can browse by production, people, genre, company, etc.
Newspapers
- Newsbank: searchable database of national & regional UK newspapers, including The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Bath Chronicle, etc. Useful for finding theatre criticism or interviews with modern playwrights!
Dissertations
- EThOS: free access to a rapidly increasing number of UK PhD and MPhil dissertations. You need to complete a simple registration process before you can download full-text dissertations (but you can search the database without registering).
- NTLTD (Networked Digital Library of Theses & Dissertations): enables you to search & download dissertations produced worldwide.
