Username/password
- If you're using the Library's electronic resources from home, you might be asked for a username/password - this is exactly the same as your normal Bath Spa username/password.
BSU quick links
- Library catalogue: use the Advanced search options to find e-books, printed journals, sheet music, CDs, and DVDs.
- Electronic journals: we subscribe to over 8,500 online journal titles. E-journal collections for Music include JSTOR, Academic Search Premier, EBSCO E-journals, and Business Source Premier.
- RefWorks: web-based software that allows you to store your essay references (from books, websites, e-journals), then automatically create bibliographies in all the common referencing formats (Harvard, Numeric, etc).
BSU e-books
- Music e-books: rapidly expanding BSU collection of over 70 books, giving you 24/7 access to some of your modules' key texts. Including works about composers, the music business, music technology, etc. Unlike Google Books you can always access the entire book!
- Library catalogue: individual e-book titles can be accessed from the library catalogue, where they are labelled as an electronic resource. Use the Advanced search option to find specific titles.
- Dictionary of National Biography: biographical information about (dead) British composers & musicians.
- Oxford English Dictionary: comprehensive English dictionary. An unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history and pronunciation of over half a million words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international sources.
- Oxford Music Online: provides access to Grove Music Online, the Encyclopedia of Popular Music, the Oxford Dictionary of Music and the Oxford Companion to Music.
- Oxford History of Western Music provides access to the acclaimed account of the evolution of Western classical music by Richard Taruskin. It includes over 500 images and 1,800 musical examples plus links to Oxford Music Online.
BSU e-journals
If you're looking for a particular e-journal title, use our Find e-journals search engine. Note that a single e-journal title may be held in several different e-journal collections.
If you're looking for a particular topic or keyword, you must decide which of the following e-journal collections to search within (you cannot currently search all our e-journal collections at the same time):-
- Academic Search Premier (EBSCO): includes over 45 music related e-journal titles, eg Contemporary Music Review, Electronic Musician, Journal of New Music Research, Journal of Research in Music Education, Leonardo Music Journal, Musical Times, Popular Music & Society, Popular Music History, Rolling Stone, Strad.
- Business Source Premier (EBSCO): includes e-journal titles relevant to Commercial Music, eg Music Week, Billboard.
- E-journals (EBSCO): This site provides online access to over 140 journal titles, hand-picked by BSU academic staff for their research value, eg Computer Music Journal, International Journal of Community Music, Jazz Perspectives, Journal of Film Music, Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Music Analysis, Music & Letters, Music Perception, Music, Sound, and the Moving Image, Popular Music, Psychology of Music.
- International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance (EBSCO): despite the title, this includes some full-text e-journals & e-books of interest to Music, with particular emphasis on music theatre and opera, eg Sondheim Review, Opera Journal.
- JSTOR Music Collection: contains the back runs of 65 titles dedicated to scholarly research and theory in the field of music, eg Cambridge Opera Journal, Early Music, Folk Music Journal, Journal of Music Theory, Musical Quarterly, Music Theory Spectrum, 19th Century Music, Perspectives of New Music, Tempo.
- Project MUSE: 12 music-related titles, including American Music, Asian Music, Women and Music, Opera Quarterly. Unlike JSTOR, MUSE normally provides up-to-date access to new journal issues.
Streaming audio
- Naxos Music Library: listen online to the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues, with over 130,000 tracks including classical music, jazz, and world music.
Newspapers
- Newsbank: searchable database of national & regional UK newspapers, including The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Bath Chronicle, etc. Useful for music business news or interviews with contemporary composers.
Dissertations
- EThOS: free access to a rapidly increasing number of UK PhD and MPhil dissertations. You need to complete a simple registration process before you can download full-text dissertations (but you can search the database without registering).
- NTLTD (Networked Digital Library of Theses & Dissertations): enables you to search & download dissertations produced worldwide.
Market Research
- Mintel : a database of consumer and market research reports. Includes reports on "Music and Video Purchasing" and "Music Concerts and Festivals".
