Library regulations

This document is to be regarded as definitive and as such should not be held on file elsewhere!

  1. All full-time and part-time members of staff and students of the University are entitled to borrow from the Library following confirmation from University authorities and on receipt of a reader's card. On receipt of a card, a reader may use both University libraries and must abide by these regulations.
  2. Each reader is responsible for all items issued to his or her reader's card until the loan has been cancelled. Readers' cards are not transferable.
  3. Part-time students and staff should notify the library of their home address and any changes to that address.
  4. The loss of a reader's card should be reported immediately to the library staff. A charge is made for replacement cards.
  5. It is the reader's responsibility to return or renew loans on or before the due date. Fines are charged for the late return of loans. Readers should acquaint themselves with the current loan and fines policy.
  6. Readers should return recalled items immediately on request.
  7. If readers have (i) outstanding fines and/or (ii) overdue loans causing a withdrawal of borrowing rights, they will not be permitted to borrow or reserve further items until their record is cleared.
  8. The replacement cost will be charged if loans are not returned.
  9. Any reader found to have marked, defaced or damaged any Library item will be charged the replacement cost of that item.
  10. All loans must be returned and any outstanding fines paid by readers before they leave the University.
  11. Equipment in the Library should be used with due care and attention. If faults occur when using equipment, readers must not attempt their own repairs but should inform Library staff immediately.
  12. The Library accepts no responsibility for personal possessions brought into the Library.
  13. All readers should acquaint themselves with the fire and safety regulations displayed in the Library.
  14. No smoking, excessive noise or reserving of seats is allowed in the Library.  Mobile phones should be switched off or to silent before entering the Amber and Red zones.
  15. Silence should be observed in the silent study rooms (Red zones).
  16. After use, readers should return items not on loan to them or which they do not intend taking out on loan to their correct place on the shelves.
  17. Consideration of other readers' needs should be observed at all times.
