Adding photocopies to the Counter Collection

Information for academic ataff

Photocopies of journal articles and book chapters of material not held in the Library may be ordered and added to the Counter Collection to give students wider access to this material. In addition, photocopies of our own stock may be added within copyright constraints and also within space constraints.

Placing requests

Requests should be made through your School Librarian.

Timescale

Please place any requests at least 6 weeks before the start of the module in order to give the Library time to acquire and/or process the item(s).

What is permitted within copyright constraints:

Ordering material not in stock

In general, the material will be obtained through the British Library's Copyright Cleared Service which allows the Library to add material to stock and for it to be copied on by students. The cost of obtaining the material will be charged to the subject's library book fund. The cost will vary according to the publication requested and your School Librarian will liaise with you on the cost before the order is placed.

Adding material from Library stock

We would normally ask that academic departments provide the photocopied article/chapter and pass on to their School Librarian. Copies must conform to copyright regulations.

Adding more than one copy of the same article/chapter to the Counter Collection

Due to space restrictions, we would normally allow up to three copies of one article in the Counter Collection.

Counter Collection and study packs

Following the Copyright Tribunal ruling in December 2001, libraries are now permitted to place study packs, other than those created by electronic copying, in a restricted Counter Collection. However, due to space constraints, the Library is unable to accept the deposit of study packs.

Photocopies supplied to you through the Interlibrary Loans service

The Library is not allowed to accept photocopies that were originally supplied for your research or private study via interlibrary loans.

Donating copies for the Counter Collection

Any copies accepted by the Library must have been legitimately obtained and the Cover Sheet which must be attached to each copy must declare its source. Any written permission from the right holder and a copy of any documentation associated with the permission to copy on should also be submitted.
