Financing your studies at Bath Spa University

Please note - Currently the US Federal Aid Scheme is under revue and may be subject to change; any changes in the Scheme are likely to occur after 1^st of July 2010.  We will update any changes on this website.

There are a number of ways in which students from the USA and Canada can finance their studies in the UK.

**Please note that unlike US universities, we will not be automatically notified when you complete a FAFSA form on line. You will need to contact us to tell us you are applying for Federal Aid.**

FAFSA - Free application for Federal Student Aid

Which university or foreign school to attend is one of the most important decisions you need to make. Another is how you're going to pay for your education. To help you, the U.S. Department of Education offers a variety of student financial aid programs.

How to apply for a federal aid loan:

1. Contact FAFSA to access a FAFSA form online.
2. Enter our school code: G35333
3. Submit your FAFSA form online.
4. FAFSA will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR). You can then request an 8 page version SAR for your university. Alternatively send your short electronic SAR along with your full SSN to Federal Aid Officer Bath Spa University and we will obtain the long version for you.
5. After you have received the SAR, you must contact the guarantor of your loan for a Master Promissory Note (MPN, addendum, Plain Language Disclosure) form and a School Certification form for a Stafford Loan. Depending upon how much you want to borrow, you may also need to complete a MPN for a PLUS loan. (School Certification, PLUS addendum, Plain Language Disclosure)
6. Send the "8 page version" of your SAR and your completed MPN and the School Certification form (obtained from the stated guarantor) to the UK institution where you have been accepted so that it can determine how much assistance you are entitled to.
7. The UK institution will fill out your Stafford Loan School Certification form appropriately with tuition fees and dates of terms, and then return the completed documents to your chosen lender. For Bath Spa University, please complete this form to tell us how much you want to borrow in order for us to be able complete this step.
8. Your loan will be in effect.

What programmes are eligible for loans?

US and Canadian students can apply for loans for short term Study Abroad Programmes, either at undergraduate or postgraduate level, as well as fully enrolled Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. Stafford (subsidised) loans are only available for full time full academic year programmes.

Deadlines

The deadline for student loan applications to reach Bath Spa University is 1st August each year. We can accept applications received after this date and we will do our best to process them as quickly as possible, but this may mean that you will receive your loan after the start of your course. Loan applications received before this date will be held and processed on 1st August.
