The Costs of Accommodation
Living Costs
It is difficult to estimate how much your living costs will be - it could vary between £6,000 and £10,000 a year. It is important to set out a budget and try to stick to it so that you know exactly where you are with your money.
Accommodation
This will be your biggest single expense. Hall of Residence prices vary, depending on whether you have a single, shared or en-suite room. The license fee includes all bills for heating, lighting and hot water, but not for food (all student accommodation is self-catering).
Accommodation in private rented accommodation is in the range of £60 to £80 per week. Bills are usually only included in rents in private accommodation where a student has a room in a landlord's house, so you would normally expect to pay bills for heating and lighting on top of this.
Landlords generally ask for one month's rent as deposit, and often ask for half rent payments in July and August as a retainer (although some landlords charge twelve month's full rent). You will need to check if your landlord expects to be paid termly or monthly. If you propose to use a letting agency you are strongly advised to check fees/costs before proceeding, as many agents charge high fees. The Student Housing Office based at Newton Park campus provides lists of private landlords and expert advice about leases and other accommodation matters if you will be living off-campus.
Don't forget the cost of laundry too .
If you plan to have a television in your room in halls, you will also need a TV license.
Households made up exclusively of students do not pay Council Tax.
